News Release by Inter-Parliamentary Union

IPU welcomes the decision by competent authorities in the Maldives not to use force to convene Parliament today.

The Organization is also appealing to all parties to refrain from any act or pronouncement that would further aggravate the situation.

Continuing its efforts to promote a peaceful resolution to the current crisis in the numry through political dialogue, IPU urges all parties concerned to use dialogue to resolves outstanding issues and allow Parliament to meet in a peaceful and conducive environment.

The IPU remains committed to facilitating that dialogue if that is the wish of all parties concerned.

IPU reiterates its position that Parliament, as the legitimate representative institution of the people, should be allowed to function so as to articulate the will of the people. Parliament must continue to be the primary forum for dialogue and compromise.
